What is the UN International Day of Peace?

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. An invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities for the Day.

How did the Day of Peace get started?

Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. The long-term goal is to sow the seed of peace, to bring to life the United Nations Resolution on the Right of Peoples to Peace (A/RES/39/11): “… That the maintenance of a peaceful life for peoples is the sacred duty of each State” and “peoples of our planet have a sacred right to peace.”

What types of events are are part of the Day of Peace?

Through the years, many diverse activities have been organized in observance of the International Day of Peace. These include: educational events and conferences, workshops, marches, musical celebrations, meditations, intercultural dialogues and interfaith gatherings, environmental projects, art exhibits, community gatherings and much more.

How can I participate in the Day of Peace?

Join in a moment of silence at Noon your time on Thursday, September 21st. Remember to pray and send intentions for peace throughout the day. Participate virtually or locally in the many events that are being offered. There are links and information below on this page.
