What is Silence?

Simply stated silence is the absence of noise. It can also refer to the act of refraining from talking or other forms of communication. Silence is universally viewed as one of the essential components of contemplative practice and is often praised as an admirable discipline. However, an enforced or contrived silence can also be a severe form of punishment especially if the intent is to stifle expression

Methods of silence.

From taking a quiet walk through the woods to simply being still and listening to a beautiful piece of music there are thousands of ways of practicing silence and hundreds of distinct practices that utilize it. In meditation, prayer, reflection, contemplation and movement we can embrace silence in countless ways.

Challenges and commitments of practice.

While silence may be “golden”, we must recognize that human beings are social beings and that communication and sound are often essential to our emotional health. Many people find silence frightening and have great difficulty being “alone with their thoughts.” Because of this, it is often wise to ease into meditative practices that require silence.
