What is storytelling?

Storytelling is the conveying or recounting of events in words, sounds, images and/or physical movement. Storytelling is a creative process and often involves dramatic embellishment and improvisation. Storytelling is perhaps one of the most powerful and transformative human skills and is universal to the human experience. It can be argued that all cultures begin with a shared story and stories themselves become vehicles for the transmission of culture as well as sources of education, entertainment, and moral instruction.

How do I become a storyteller?

We all tell stories – storytelling a part of our daily existence and is integral to the way that we communicate with others. Mindfulness and contemplation can help us improve our storytelling skills by helping us asses the relevance or value of our story, whether it has a moral point or purpose, and who needs to hear or would be receptive to the story. Further reflection can help us understand how the story might be made more impactful and helpful to our audiences. If our goal is simply to be able to recount classic stories to an audience, choose stories that are meaningful to you and practice telling them before you share them with your children or others.
