What is Whole Health Austin?
"Whole Health Austin is an Integrative and Holistic Medical Clinic that operates on the common ground between Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), our Microbiome, and Western Medicine. The thread that connects these sciences is our gut. For thousands of years, Ayurveda and TCM have recognized and highlighted how healing starts in the intestines, gall bladder, liver, and stomach. Today, we are proving this true through large-scale endeavors like the Human Food Project, which is defining and mapping the Microbiome.
What was the inspiration for this mission?
The clinic was inspired and founded by Darshan Shah, MD. He utilizes his knowledge and experience in various disciplines to help people improve their physiology. Dr. Shah discovered that moving towards a Whole Food Plant-Based diet has improved his personal health significantly. Specifically, he no longer has asthma or reflux symptoms. He has also lost weight and feels lighter, and more energetic. Everyone’s constitution is different and requires a customized approach and tweaking over time. Whole Health Austin helps people catalyze the changes to diet and lifestyle to help them achieve optimal health and well-being.
How do you define Yoga, Ayurveda, The Microbiome & Western Medicine?
Yoga is a self-awareness practice that balances the nervous system, specifically the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the Autonomic Nervous System.
Ayurveda is an ancient Indian Life Science that recognizes that healing begins with cleansing the gut. It has successfully helped people live well for thousands of years.
The Microbiome is the community of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that exist within our bodies, primarily our gut, and includes 100x more genetic information than our own genome.
Western Medicine is the current framework through which we explain to ourselves how everything works, based on Newtonian Science. It also is a very good system for acute problems.
What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative Medicine is the term used that utilizes ideas and concepts from a variety of healing traditions, ancient and modern. This approach uses whole food plant based diets, the science of the Microbiome and Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbs and nutritional supplements, and Western Medicine. Based on a patient’s unique background a customized approach is used that is most likely to stimulate their innate ability to heal.
What services are offered?
Whole Health Austin provides Integrative Medicine and Primary Care Services, and Consultations. Additional services offered include Mind-Body Skills Groups and BioFlex Laser Treatments. The unifying theme of all these services revolves around the core belief that the body has an innate ability to heal, and there are ways to promote and enhance this natural built-in function. It means that within us all is an innate intelligence that knows what we need at all times. Call it an inner voice or conscience. We work to reconnect you to the internal voice you were born with, the one that helps you take care of yourself. We help you to begin “listening to your gut.”
